This is one of my FAVORITE things to do for gifts. I just went to a baby shower for a friend who met her husband in France…and I knew I needed to make them a Onesie!

FREEZER PAPER STENCIL TUTORIAL

Supplies

Onesie (or whatever fabric you want to do it on to)
Freezer Paper
Cutting Mat
X-acto Knife Razor Blade
Fabric Paint
Foam Paint Brush
1.  Print off the words that you want to use. I just went into Word and found a few fonts that were thick enough to cut out and that I liked. You could also sketch this by hand if you are artistic like that…just make sure the letters are a little chunky!

2. Lay your printed off word underneath your freezer paper. Trace carefully.

3. On your cutting mat, start to VERY carefully cut out the inside of any letters with your X-acto Knife. BE SURE TO SAVE THE INSIDES OF YOUR LETTERS! You will need to iron these on to your shirts later.

4. Now carefully cut out all of your letters with the X-acto Knife. You don’t need to save these.

5. Iron your onesie flat. If you want you can also insert cardboard inside the onesie or something similar to help stretch the shirt out a little bit…I forgot this time, but I have in the past.

6. Lay your freezer paper stencil on your shirt. Get it in the exact position you want.

7. Iron your stencil on high heat with no steam, being very careful and making sure to get all the edges down.

8. Now take the insides of the letter that you saved and carefully lay them where you want. Iron on.

9. Insert wax paper, a piece of paper, or anything in between the layers of the onesie (if you haven’t already) to make sure the paint doesn’t bleed through . You are ready to paint! Paint generously over the stencil in different directions to make sure you get paint on all the exposed fabric. Wait a few hours between coats.

10. I let mine dry over night. Once it was completely dry you can start to remove your stencil! Pull slowly and carefully on your stencil. You can kind of pinch the freezer paper and pull on it to help it come up. Don’t forget to remove the insides of the letters!

11. Lay some fabric over your design and iron it to help set the paint.

And there you go!

I have even done pictures this way and they are so fun:

George Washington for the 4th of July

BYU shirt for my little boy

The possibilities are endless!

Wow! That is really cool- I’ve used freezer paper for applique and just figured that’s what this post would be about. I never thought of paint. I’m going to have to get thinking now 🙂
